Description:

Burns & McDonnell’s Southeast Region is seeking a Transmission Engineer to support the growing Transmission & Distribution practice. Based in Atlanta, GA or Charlotte, NC, this role involves designing, analyzing, and overseeing the construction of high-voltage overhead transmission lines ranging from 69kV to 500kV. The engineer will perform detailed technical work, prepare specifications, and develop cost estimates while mentoring junior staff and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform and oversee engineering design of overhead transmission lines, including:
    • PLS-CADD modeling
    • Line routing
    • Structure analysis and loading trees
    • Design criteria development
    • Sag-tension and clearance calculations
  • Wire blowout, swing angle, damper recommendations, and structure spotting
  • Prepare specifications and materials for construction, hardware, and equipment.
  • Design structures and develop related hardware for HV overhead transmission lines.
  • Create construction drawings, cost estimates, and field installation guidelines.
  • Provide technical instruction and guidance to less experienced engineers.
  • Review and ensure quality control of designs and calculations.
  • Act as a technical lead or project liaison between engineering and clients.
  • Contribute to team collaboration, documentation, and project delivery.
  • Support field supervision and installation reviews as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in high-voltage transmission line routing and design.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving ability.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in a related engineering discipline.
  • EIT certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience using Power Line System software (PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE).
  • Background in 69kV to 500kV line design.
  • Prior experience as a technical lead or project reviewer.
